Grid-tied versus off-grid: different equipment, different rules

A DIY kit marketed for grid-tied use should explicitly state its inverter meets the relevant UL safety listing for grid interconnection; a kit that doesn't specify this, or that uses a cheaper inverter not rated for grid-tie use, either can't legally be connected to the grid or requires an additional, non-trivial equipment purchase before it can be.

Off-grid kits — battery-based systems not connected to utility power at all — avoid the interconnection agreement entirely but still typically require an electrical permit and inspection if they're wired into a home's electrical system rather than running standalone devices directly off the battery bank. Solar panels themselves typically carry the longest warranties in the kit, often 20 to 25 years for power output, but inverters and batteries — the parts most likely to actually fail first — often carry much shorter warranties, sometimes as little as 5 to 10 years for inverters and less for batteries depending on chemistry and usage cycles.
