Rug Sizing for Every Room: How to Order the Right Dimensions by Mail
The most common rug mistake is ordering too small. A rug that does not extend under at least the front legs of the furniture it anchors looks like an accent piece that got lost. Here is the sizing logic for each room type, in plain numbers.
Rugs sold by catalog and mail-order retailers come in standard sizes. The most common are 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, and 10x14 feet, plus round and runner variations. The size that looks right in a product photo may look dramatically different on your floor. Before ordering any rug by mail, take floor measurements and tape out the intended rug area on the floor with painter’s tape to visualize the actual footprint.
Room-by-room sizing guide
| Room | Layout | Recommended rug size | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room (small) | Sofa and two chairs around a coffee table; room 10x12 to 12x14 | 8x10 | All front legs of seating on rug; coffee table fully on rug |
| Living room (medium) | Full seating group; room 14x16 to 16x18 | 9x12 | All four legs of all major seating pieces on rug if possible |
| Living room (large / open plan) | Large seating group; room over 18 feet in one direction | 10x14 or larger | Rug defines the seating zone; leave 12 to 18 inches between rug edge and wall |
| Dining room (4-seat table) | 36x48 inch table; 4 chairs | 6x9 minimum | Chairs must remain on rug when pulled out; add 24 inches per side of table |
| Dining room (6-seat table) | 36x72 inch table; 6 chairs | 8x10 minimum | Same 24-inch rule; chairs dragging off a rug are the most common dining rug mistake |
| Dining room (8-seat table) | 42x84 inch or larger; 8 chairs | 9x12 | Confirm by adding 24 inches to each table dimension; result is minimum rug size |
| Bedroom (queen bed) | Queen bed (60x80 in.) centered on rug or headboard against wall | 8x10 (headboard off wall) or 5x8 (under foot of bed, headboard to wall) | 18 to 24 inches of rug should extend on each exposed side of the bed |
| Bedroom (king bed) | King bed (76x80 in.) | 9x12 or 10x14 | Same 18 to 24 inch extension rule; 9x12 fits a king with headboard at wall |
| Entryway / foyer (small) | Narrow entry, one door | 2x3 or 3x5 | Rug should not block door swing; measure the full door arc before ordering |
| Hallway runner | Standard hallway, 36 to 48 inches wide | 2 feet wide x length minus 12 to 18 inches at each end | Leave bare floor showing at both ends; runner should not span wall to wall |
| Home office | Desk and chair; rolling desk chair | 5x8 minimum under and around desk | Rolling chairs require a smooth-faced or low-pile rug; confirm pile height before ordering |
How to tape out the area before ordering
Painter’s tape is the most useful tool for mail-order rug buying. Before placing an order:
- Move or temporarily reposition furniture to approximately where it will be relative to the rug.
- Use painter’s tape to mark the exact rug dimensions on the floor.
- Place the furniture back in position.
- Check whether the front legs of sofas and chairs land on the taped area. Check that chairs pulled out from a dining table remain within the taped boundary.
- Step back and assess the visual balance. If the taped area looks too small, order up one size.
What to check in a rug listing before ordering
- Exact dimensions: Handmade or hand-knotted rugs often vary from stated dimensions by up to 2 to 3 percent. A listed 8x10 rug may be 7’10” x 9’11”. For tight fits, confirm whether the listing is nominal or actual.
- Pile height: Low pile (under 0.5 inches) works under dining tables and rolling chairs. High pile (over 1 inch) is comfortable underfoot but traps crumbs and is unsuitable under rolling furniture.
- Rug pad requirement: Most mail-order rugs on hard floors require a rug pad to prevent slipping and protect the floor. Rug pad size should match the rug size or be cut 1 inch smaller on all sides. Confirm rug pad is sold separately and factor that into the order.
- Return policy for rugs: Many retailers accept rug returns within 30 days if the rug is unrolled and rerolled in original packaging without staining or damage. Read the policy; some online retailers are more generous on rug returns than on other large goods.
