Mattress Sizing Guide for Mail-Order Buyers: Dimensions, Trial Periods, and What to Check
Mail-order and online mattress companies changed how Americans buy beds, but the fundamental questions remain the same: does the size fit the frame and room, and will you actually sleep on it comfortably? Here is what to know before you click order.
The mail-order mattress market has grown substantially since the mid-2010s. Compressed, rolled, and boxed delivery made it practical to ship mattresses via UPS or FedEx rather than freight, reducing cost and simplifying logistics. Most major mail-order mattress companies now offer some form of in-home trial. But the same decisions that shoppers make in a showroom — size, firmness, materials — still need to be made correctly before the order ships.
Standard US mattress dimensions
| Size name | Width (inches) | Length (inches) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 | 75 | Single sleeper, child’s room, bunk bed |
| Twin XL | 38 | 80 | Single sleeper taller than 6 feet, college dorm |
| Full (Double) | 54 | 75 | Single adult who wants more width, guest room |
| Queen | 60 | 80 | Couples or single sleepers who want more space; most common size |
| King | 76 | 80 | Couples wanting maximum width; requires room at least 12 feet wide |
| California King | 72 | 84 | Sleepers over 6 feet 2 inches; slightly narrower than King |
| Split King | Two Twin XL side by side (76 total) | 80 | Couples with different firmness preferences; requires split adjustable base |
Important: mattress dimensions vary by manufacturer by up to an inch in either direction. A California King mattress from one company may be 71.5 x 83.5 inches; from another, 72.5 x 84. If you have an existing bed frame, confirm the interior frame dimensions before ordering. Most bed frames list the mattress size they accommodate, but measure the actual interior if you have any doubt.
Matching mattress size to room size
A King mattress in a small room leaves inadequate walking space on each side. A rule of thumb: leave at least 24 inches of clearance on both sides of the mattress and at the foot. For a King mattress (76 x 80 inches), this requires a room of roughly 12 x 12 feet minimum. A Queen mattress (60 x 80 inches) fits comfortably in a 10 x 10 room with the bed against one wall, or a 10 x 12 room with walking space on both sides.
Choosing firmness without trying it first
Mail-order companies use firmness scales, typically 1 through 10 or descriptive terms (plush, medium, firm, extra firm). These are not standardized across brands. A “medium” from one company may feel like a “firm” from another. Use the following as a general framework rather than a precise guide:
- Soft to medium-soft (1–4): Better for side sleepers who need pressure relief at the shoulder and hip. Can cause back pain for stomach sleepers.
- Medium (5–6): The most broadly suitable range for back sleepers and combination sleepers. Suitable for most body weights under 230 pounds.
- Firm to extra firm (7–10): Better for stomach sleepers, back sleepers who prefer minimal sink, and heavier sleepers who need more support through the foam before reaching the base layers.
Body weight matters significantly. A 140-pound sleeper will experience the same mattress as noticeably firmer than a 250-pound sleeper, because heavier sleepers compress foam layers more deeply. Many mail-order companies include this guidance in their firmness descriptions.
How trial periods actually work
Most mail-order mattress companies offer trial periods ranging from 30 to 365 nights. The mechanics vary, so read the terms before ordering.
- Minimum trial period: Many companies require you to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before a return is accepted. Mattresses need an adjustment period; returns before this threshold are typically not eligible.
- Return logistics: Most companies arrange pickup at no cost to you during the trial period. Confirm this. Some companies require you to donate the mattress to a charity they specify; others arrange pickup for recycling or resale.
- Condition requirements: Mattresses generally must not have stains, tears, or significant damage to be eligible for return. Using a mattress protector from the first night preserves eligibility.
- Refund timeline: Expect 5 to 14 business days for a refund after pickup is confirmed, not after you initiate the return request.
A trial period is only useful if you actually use it when the mattress is not working. Many buyers let the window close without acting, then live with a mattress they do not like for years. Mark the trial end date on your calendar the day the mattress arrives.
